• A promo piece: helmet and shield

helmet and shield in dolomite, small example

As I mentioned a few times before, family crests among my favorite projects and in that context I visit will the Day of Heraldry at Kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn next Saturday, where I will also be on the 'market’ .. Unfortunately, I can not really show much of my work, because everything that's finished goes straight to the customer.

And as the Chinese might say , quoted in English, in this case, ‘A Picture Paints A Thousand Words’, but a picture is not the same as a live piece of sculpture that you can touch. That is why I have taken up a small piece of Dolomite today as an example, in which I carved a helmet and shield. This should give an impression of how my work might look if you're considering commissioning a crest relief or coat of arms, or sculpture (why not a complete freestanding coat-of-arms STATUE in 3D all around??) .. Something to show and tell, so to say.

The light was not ideal for taking photos, yesterday. After a long wait for a cloud to finally slide in front of the sun (why isn't there any wind when you need it?) at a quarter past six I finally just cycled home. I hope I can make some better pics in the next few days, however, here goes: my statuette of the street worker is finished.

I've carved it largely in the direct carving style, in other words, without too much measuring. After initially having made a clay model and a saw model in preparation, I carved the rest largely by eye.

The figurine is carved out of dolomite and is about 80 cms tall. On the surface I left a plain chisel's marks and finished the footplate with a toothed chisel's marks. The client is planning to make himself a base for it out of paving bricks.

Update: better pictures. It was pretty late in the evening, but the light was good, so here it is: new photos
