You wouldn't say so from the posts on this blog, but I've been very busy these past few weeks. In preparation for the exhibition at Kunst en Kastelen (Art and Castles) I've done all kinds of work, and created a few new sculptures in stone. Here is the first one: a sculpture in Anröchter Grünstein, or dolomite.
It is about 50 cm high and wide. The rear curl is carved completely detached. This sculpture is actually a brother of my bigger one 'Ferns’, that I made previously in dolomite as well.
The sculpture is still quite dark now. But this stone, which, incidentally, does not come from the Italian mountains but just from Germany, has a special feature: once it is left outside for a while, it will gradually turn bright green all by itself, which I find very beautiful. So over time it will only become more beautiful!

Today is the 25th anniversary of the road construction company Gebr. Kloens B.V.. from Dordrecht. Their anniversary is one of the reasons for the silence on my blog: I carved a statue of a bricklayer for them out of dolomite , again largely via the direct carving method. But I had to keep quiet because the brothers couldn't know until today . This version got working shoes, is built a bit heavier and has slightly more details.
I am very happy about how the statuette has turned out, It's something I'm looking back at with pleasure, and all those details makes it a bit reminiscent of those paintings of eastern European primitive painters: not everything has to be absolutely right, but you will keep looking back at it.
On the day I took these photos it rained quite a bit, but it gave some nice contrasts so I decided to leave it like that.
The clients dont know yet how it will be placed ultimately, nor where. Most likely is that in front of the building a pedestal will be constructed out of pavers, upon which comes the stainless steel plate that mentions the anniversary. I cut the logo and the years in the base plate of the sculpture, which makes it immediately clear what the statue is intended for. The sculpture is 85 cms tall, x 42 x 65 cms wide, and carved out of Anröchter Grünstein (dolomite).
